WEC and Documentary Thoughts

I finally got a change to check out the WEC show from last night and I was very impressed.

*The german suplex was awesome, enough said.

*Doug Marshall still doesn’t impress me. He’s not a top 10 LHW and he couldn’t hang with anyone in the UFC. It was nice of him to score a submission victory as we already know about his stand up but until he steps in there with a top guy, I don’t think I’ll ever be impressed.

*Jens looked great at 145 and HUMBLED! Cub Swanson. Looks like training with BJ Penn improved his ground game and that could be scary.

*Filho was involved in some controversy and I’m not sure that he won the fight. He clearly lost the first round and he was losing the second round until he locked in the arm bar. Sonnen screamed “no” but he did not tap or nod as his as a tap. He was humbled in defeat but I would like to see a rematch between the two, with a clear outcome.

*It was nice to see Faber in some trouble for once. We know how dominant he can be but we have never really seen him in any trouble. He showed the heart of a champion as he came back and managed to pull off the win. The jumping knee was sick as well. Looks like WEC will set up Jens vs. Faber for sometime next year and that has all kinds of potential.

I also checked out the CNBC Documentary about the UFC. I thought it was well done and educated some new fans about the history of the sport more than anything. Plus Dana White = Ratings.

Huerta/Guida Thoughts

After doing the recaps of TUF6 for weeks now, it was fun to sit down and watch the Finale this weekend. I won’t give my thoughts on every fighter/fight because I’m saving that for my column on 411 later this week. I will however talk about Huerta/Guida and the AWESOMENESS that it was.

If you have note see Huerta/Guida, go watch it now. Even if you’re not a MMA fan, it’s still an amazing fight. I was rolling with my friends this weekend and showing them basic positions like guard, half guard, mount, ect… and then Huerta/Guida came on the TV screen. They were amazed at what two guys could do from the basic positions that I just showed them. Basically, that fight has turned them into full blown MMA fans and they’re excited about coming over to watch UFC 79 later this month. This fight had everything: Great technique, brawling, close finishes, and a conclusive ending. Both men fought their heart out and have no reason to hang their head. Huerta proved that he was for real and Guida proved that he’s a challenge for anyone. This is what MMA and UFC is all about.

I’m not sure if Huerta/Guida will end up being the fight of the year (Diaz/Gomi, Guida/Griffin, and Griffin/Shogun are all top candidates) but it was an amazing end to a great year from the Lightweight division. It seemed like every time you took a top Lightweight contender (Huerta, Griffin, Guida, Florian, Edgar, Fisher, Stout, ect…) they produced an exciting fight.

Now that Sean Sherk has been stripped of the Lightweight title, we will see exciting fights for the belt. No knock on Sherk, who is a great athlete with a great work ethic, but he’s boring. No longer will title fights be boring with Penn or Stevenson holding the belt and fighting guys like I just mentioned. 2007 was the year of the Lightweight and 2008 will likely be no different.

Sherk suspension reduced

The CASC reduced Sean Sherk’s suspension for a positive steroid test from one year to six months, meaning Sherk could fight again in January. No word yet if Dana White will strip Sherk of the Lightweight title or not.

Either way, the winner of BJ Penn vs. Joe Stevenson will become some form of the Lightweight champion and will likely fight Sherk sometime in 2008. It just depends if the fight will unify the belts or if Sherk will come in as the challenger instead of the champion.

Couture “retired”, Nog vs. Sylvia

So it seems like Couture and UFC mended their fences but Couture turned down a fight against Nog in February. When news broke that Couture resigned, I was more upset that he would leave the company and wouldn’t be doing commentary/specials more than the fact that he wouldn’t fight. Since things appear to be smoothed over, hopefully Couture will return to doing commentary and helping with the countdown shows.

With the news of Couture basically retiring, it appears that Antonio Nogueira will fight Tim Sylvia at UFC 81 for the vacant Heavyweight Title. While I’m a fan of Nog, Sylvia just bores the shit out of me and ever since UFC 59 he’s turned exciting fighters into boring fighters. Arlovski, Monson, and Vera were reduced to boredom when they stepped into the octagon with Sylvia, who fights not to lose instead of fighting to winning. The Couture fight would have been boring if it wasn’t for the fact that the crowd was apeshit for the return of Couture and his dominance over Sylvia. With the title on the line, hopefully Sylvia returns to his old form where he knocked people the fuck out. Nog will be Nog and hopefully he can pull something good out of Sylvia.

Hughes vs. St. Pierre at UFC 79

UFC.com announced that Matt Hughes vs. Georges St. Pierre will take place at UFC 79 for the interim Welterweight title. GSP is the replacement for Matt Serra, who was injured in training the other day.

AWESOME! news. This fight already has a back story and we know these two will deliver. Also it makes the most sense if you’re going to put the interim title on the line since Hughes and GSP were the next two in line for a title shot. Now to face Serra, they’ll essentially have to win two fights instead of one. UFC 79 remains to be an awesome card with this fight, maybe even better.
